NEW DEHLI: Taiwanese Apple supplier Foxconn is looking to invest US$500 million in a new factory in India, the minister for IT of the state of Telangana announced on Tuesday, reported German news agency (dpa).

The new facility would create “25,000 direct jobs” in the southern Indian metropolis of Hyderabad, the minister K.T. Rama Rao said on Twitter.

Foxconn and other Apple suppliers already have manufacturing plants in India, where there are government incentives for smartphone production. However, most Apple products are still made in China.

Recently, there have been repeated reports that Apple wants to diversify its supply chains in view of geopolitical tensions with Beijing, and shift focus to India and Vietnam. – BERNAMA-dpa
