Apple has upgraded its iMac computers with the ninth generation of Intel processors and Vega graphics chips, drastically increasing speed and graphics performance, the company says.

Fans of iMacs have been waiting for a hardware upgrade following Apple’s decision last year not to update several Mac model lines, including the iMac.

This year, a new modular Mac Pro and an Apple display will also be launched. Experts expect the new professional series to be presented in a few weeks at the WWDC developer conference (June 3-7).
The new, larger iMac with a 27-inch Retina screen (starting at US$1,799 in the US) is the first to get Intel’s ninth-generation processors with six or eight cores.

According to Apple, these will offer up to 2.4 times better performance than their predecessors.
Meanwhile the the Radeon Pro Vega graphics chip in this model is said to deliver up to 50-per-cent higher graphics performance.

The smaller 21.5-inch iMac (starting at US$1,299) comes with eighth-generation quad-core, as well as the first six-core processors, a change that should bring up to 60-per-cent higher performance than the predecessor, while the Radeon Pro Vega graphics chip is said to provide 80-per-cent better graphics performance. – dpa
