KUCHING: The applications and updating of “Bantuan Sara Hidup”(BSH), previously known as “BR1M” began on Feb 1 and will continue until March 15, 2019, said DAP Serian Branch chairman Edward Luwak.

He said previously the District Offices were helping new applicants to fill the forms or update their details, but now applicants have to seek assistance from the Malaysia Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

This prompted thousands to rush to the Serian Community Hall yesterday when LHDN staff came to register the applications and in the midst of it, caused two applicants to faint.

The registration and updating of information is important for the government to be able to alleviate the burden of the poor, albeit a federal government’s programme.

Edward added that the district offices should take the initiative to render assistance to LHDN to register those eligible.

“It is a short term exercise, lasting for a month and a half. As civil servants, their purpose is to serve the society at large and not be subjected to political directives and pressures.”

He also appealed to the district office to set up a help desk for the purpose of new registration and updating of BSH.

He revealed that during his visits to the district office, the staff were not burdened with work.

He hoped that the Resident would look into the matter to ensure the services are rendered when due.
