KUCHING: The Chinese community in Saratok has been a major contributor to the local socioeconomic development since time immemorial.

Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri stressed that their presence in all corners of the state, including Saratok, should be appreciated.

“And, their every need or aspiration should also be met just like the Bumiputera (community) here. It means equal treatment.

“I personally thank them for helping to develop the local socioeconomy for so long.

“My hope is that the Chinese, Malay and Iban communities here continue to complement each other, in addition to remaining harmonious, living in peace,” he said after a meeting on the Chinese New Year 2023 celebration together with Krian assemblyman Friday Belik on Thursday (Dec 29).

He called on the Chinese community in Saratok to move forward together with the Sarawak government.

“Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is the strongest vehicle for the unification of multi-racial and religious communities in Sarawak.

“It is important that when we are united under one roof, common interests will be protected. All races can be involved in aspects of area development.

“And in Saratok, I admit that the Chinese community through the active role of non-governmental organisations has brought about a big change in the value of racial unity.”

Regarding the Chinese New Year celebration on Jan 22, Mohamad and Friday said they fully supported the celebration programme drawn up by the Chinese community.

He added that the focus was on continuous efforts to strengthen good relations between races, for example reviving the practice of ‘ngabang’ or open houses attended by all races.
