ALOR SETAR: Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) veteran, Nasir Abas’ name, or Pak Nasir as he is fondly called, has been etched twice in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) and he is making another attempt to have his name entered in the book of records for the third time.

In conjunction with this year’s National Month celebration, Nasir, 64, along with his friend, Krishnan Andy, 61 is making a 540km walk from Dataran Alor Setar, here to Shah Alam, Selangor and the feat is expected to earn him a name in the MBOR as the first senior citizen to cover the distance.

Nasir’s name has entered MBOR  for completing the 1,754km journey from Alor Setar to Rantau Panjang, Kelantan and then to Johor Bahru, Johor before returning to Alor Setar within a month. It was a feat he did in conjunction with the 2002 Merdeka Month celebration.

He made it into the MBOR
again the following year after
completing a 53-day journey from
Tawau, Sabah, to Kuching, Sarawak, covering 2,068km in conjunction
with Solo Borneo Run.

“I know many people talk about me, the man who likes to run. I do this not just for the fun of it but because I love doing it.

“It is my way of contributing to the country.  People may think that as an army veteran, I’m strong but strength isn’t everything.  It is because I want to promote the spirit of
patriotism among the people, for them to appreciate independence,” he told Bernama recently.

On his National Day run this
year, he said it would be slightly
different as he would be accompanied by friends from various races and religions.

“In fact, some of my colleagues at the camp said they would wait for me at every checkpoint to run with me,” he said.

Nasir, who has four children and 10 grandchildren, said during the run, he and Krishnan would also
distribute 5,000 Jalur Gemilang to the local community.

Nasir and Krishnan started the run after the flagging off by State Youth and Sports, Tourism, Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurial Development Committee chairman Mohd Asmirul Anuar Aris last Monday.
