Arrested for stealing cash register

MIRI: A 25-year-old local man was detained by the cops here for stealing a cash register machine at a 24-hour convenience store in Centre Point in the wee hours of Wednesday.  

The suspect was picked up near the Visitors Information Centre building at Jalan Padang.

Also seized was the cash register machine.

The arrest was made around 7.40pm that same day following on a tip off earlier on the suspect’s whereabouts.

A team of Miri Criminal Investigation (CID) Department personnel encountered some resistance from the suspect  but they eventually managed to subdue him.

In the incident on Wednesday, around 1am, the image of the suspect was caught by the premise’s closed circuit television (CCTV).

The 32-second video clip showed the suspect entering and walking towards the payment counter before ripping out the machine. The machine contained RM140 cash.

According to a police source, during the intrusion, the premises staff were inside the store and unaware of the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
