SIBU: A man was arrested not long after he sparked a fire in front of the entrance of a bank in Jalan Kampung Nyabor here, yesterday (Feb 8).

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said police received a call from the public around 9.40pm last night informing them of a small fire in front of the entrance of the bank.

“We found fragments of glass bottles and cloth believed to be used to commit arson,” he said.

At about 10.56pm (the same night), police arrested a 36-year-old local male suspect.

“The suspect also has several past criminal records. An application for remand will be made today (Feb 9).

“The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire, which carries a maximum five-year jail term, a fine, or both upon conviction,” Zulkipli said.
