KUCHING: With 2020 a year of horror and bitterness, the next year must be a time to start the healing process, to lead and build a brighter Sarawak, says Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) president Lina Soo.

She said for most people, this year had been a year of hardships and devastation, with grave economic and social imbalances accentuated and intensified by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Moving into the next decade, the shared aspiration must be about poverty alleviation, fighting corruption, advocating climate change and vowing to keep the human race and our planet safe and healthy,” she said in her New Year message on Wednesday (Dec 30).

She said thus the human race must always look forward and never backwards.

“One thing we can always revel in Sarawak is that we live in the most amazing nation where we can celebrate our multifariousness and diversity.”

She said the secret was to be strong and united, against all outside forces trying to keep Sarawakians divided through race and religion dogma and hegemony.

“The buds of change are in motion. We have to be resolute to transform Sarawak, to empower the lives of 2.8 million Sarawakians towards nation-building for a new era, to enable our future generations to live in comfort, harmony and prosperity.”

She added this year was the year once in 100 years that the human race witnessed a historical epoch in the arrival of the novel coronavirus and every person who lived through this unprecedented health crisis would l never forget the year 2020 of Covid-19.

“2020 was an ‘Annus Horribilis’, a Latin word meaning horrible year. The triple whammy of the Covid-19 pandemic, economic chaos and political polarisation plunged the whole world into a never-ending tailspin.”

She said but the people must be ready to welcome the New Year with renewed hope, love and joy and to look forward to a decade of jubilation and triumph.

“As our Sarawak’s motto says Dum Spiro Spero (While I breathe, I hope)!”
