Assemblyman converts fish pond into mini reservoir for constituents’ use during water disruption

BUTTERWORTH: Residents in Perai state constituency can help themselves to an additional source of water during the upcoming water disruption, thanks to the initiative of their assemblyman.

Perai assemblyman Datuk Seri S Sundarajoo chanced on the novel idea of converting an abandoned fish pond in Perai Eco Park, near Taman Kimsar into an emergency water retention pond for the needs of his constituents during the four-day water disruption.

His publicity officer, R Mohan said the pond, with a depth of 1.5 metres could hold up to 500,000 cubic litres of water, was cleaned in a gotong-royong on Jan 5 and converted after it was abandoned a year ago.

“Yesterday (Jan 8) the volunteer firefighters from Sungai Puyu came to help fill the water in the pond.

“Most of the housing areas here are old and don’t have a water tank in the house so the amount of water ,” he said, adding that the water was only suitable for daily use like bathing or washing clothes and not for drinking or cooking.

He also expressed hope that the residents would use the water as best as possible and not do anything detrimental to the pond as it was open and left uncovered.

In addition to the pond, there are 20 1,000-litre tanks supplied to every village community management council and hotspots in Perai donated by volunteers and factory operators in the Perai industrial area, on top of the 20 1,200 litre containers donated by the state government. – BERNAMA
