KUCHING: Sarawak Dewan Undangan Negeri members will continue to receive their remunerations as the current term continues to function until Aug 1, said DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar.
He said this is guaranteed under Section 7(a) of the Members of Administration and Members of Dewan Undangan Negeri (Remuneration, Pension and Gratuities) Ordinance, 2013 and Article 64 of the Federal Constitution.
He was responding to views by a political party which claimed that elected assemblypersons in Sarawak DUN are not entitled to their salary and allowances after June 6, which is the date of the supposed expiry of the legislature.
Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan said only ministers are entitled to receive salaries and allowances. He added this however does not extend to assistant ministers as they are not Cabinet members according to Article 7A of the Sarawak Constitution.
To this, Asfia said it was not the paramount interests of any political party that has no elected representative in the DUN to maintain and sustain assemblymen remuneration and privileges.
