SIBU: About 2,000 dogs have been vaccinated under the Sibu Chinese Community Leaders Association’s anti-rabies vaccination programme to date.

Its Chairman, Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau, said the association conducted 11 vaccination programmes this year, with the final programme scheduled for November.

“Around 2,000 dogs have received the rabies vaccine since the campaign’s inception,” he said in a press conference at the association office here yesterday (Oct 18).

Lau said that the next rabies vaccination programme will take place at SMK Tung Hua on Oct 21, commencing at 8am and conclude at 2pm.

“In addition to vaccination, KPJ will offer free health screenings for blood pressure and glucose levels from 8.30am to 10am.

“Subsequently, there will be a rabies awareness lecture from 10am to 11.30 am,” he added.

For this programme, the association has partnered with the Sibu Division Health Department, Sibu Division Veterinary Department, Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) in various areas, including Sibu Barat, Jalan Merdeka, Meritam, Brooke Drive, Ria, Estet Delta, and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.

Lau urged the public to attend the lecture and bring their dogs to receive the rabies vaccine.

“Our goal is not only to provide vaccinations but also to raise awareness on this issue. We believe that increasing awareness of rabies is crucial.

“When someone is bitten, it can be a matter of life and death, and we hope that by organising this campaign, we can reduce the number of cases,” he stressed.
