Association installs new office bearers

KAPIT: The Kapit Foochow Association held an installation ceremony for its main body, Youth’s Wing, Women’s Wing and Veteran Section during the “Harmonious Foochow Night and Office bearers Installation” ceremony at the civic centre here on Sunday evening.

The ceremony was jointly officiated at by an advisor in the Chief Minister’s Office Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi who is also Kapit MP, Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat and Second Vice-President of Sarawak Foochow Federation Ing Thian Chai.

Nanta in his speech urged the business community in the town to appreciate the Dayaks working overseas because they are sending money to their families in Kapit to spend which resulted in business to thrive well in the town.

“Dayaks working overseas are indirectly supporting the local economy because they send money to their families here to spend unlike timber companies which do not spend their money here.

“Kapit is developing very well with roads being built to facilitate communication and provide cheap transportation. It is very important for the rural areas to be developed because when the rural communities are doing very well; they are the ones who spend their money in the town. The urban folk are different, they spent their money by holidaying overseas or going to other towns and cities. It is the rural folk who come to this town to their daily necessities and other items,” Nanta said.

“I have just returned from a visit to a longhouse with Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit. The longhouse residents were very happy with us for helping to provide them with road, electricity and water supplies to their longhouse. We are working very hard to develop Kapit. Hence, I urged you not to use politics to divide us,” he explained.

During the event, Nanta also announced a grant of RM5,000 each for the association’s main body, women wing, youth wing and veteran section.

The new committee for the association’s main body for the year 2019 to 2020 term is headed by Kapitan Yiap Yii Hoo with Ling Hang Ping as his deputy, Councillor David Wong Hau Ching as the secretary for Mandarin correspondence, James Ling as the secretary for English correspondence and Yii Su Soon as the treasurer.

The new committee for the Youth’s Wing is led by Ting King Yiing with Gabriel Chieng as the deputy Youth chief, Wong Siew Siong as the secretary with Kong Chung Kok as his assistant. Kong Chien Siau is the treasurer.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Wing committee is headed by Sia Leh Ching as the women chief who is assisted by Tiong Kiu Lan, Ling Kok Hua as the secretary and assisted by Jenny Yii. Kong Pei Geok is the treasurer.

The Veteran Section is headed by Penghulu Wong Kie Ing with Chu Tung King as his deputy. Lau Sui Nai is the secretary with Yii See King as his assistant. Grace Wong is the treasurer.

Chairman of the Social Welfare Committee is Kapitan Yiap Hii Hoo while Councillor David Wong Hau Ching is the secretary.

Among those present were Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Kapit Resident Joseph Belayong, Kapit Deputy Resident Galong Luang, Kapit District Officer Elvis Didit and administrative officer for Bukit Mabong District Jason Kong and Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo.
