SIBU: The Sacred Heart School Old Students Association (SHOSA) Knights plans to hold its grand reunion once every five years instead of annually.
Its president, Penghulu Yong King Sung, said that in between these five years, SHOSA would still carry hold class gatherings, bringing different batches together for a night of fellowship.
“By going back to basics, we will enable members to focus on enhancing their school-day bonds with minimal distractions from staged programmes, and giving them the space and time to truly connect with each other,” he said during SHOSA’s annual general meeting cum reunion 2024 held at a renowned hotel here, which was attended by Deputy State Secretary (Operations) Datuk Hii Chang Kee on Saturday evening.
Yong said that although the simple class gatherings would have less glitz and razzmatazz, it would have more substance and quality.
“Such a strategy will enable SHOSA to hold grand quinquennial celebrations, instead of waiting for a decade or more before carrying out something grand,” he added.
He emphasised that for the last five decades since 1977, Sacred Heart School (SHS) had hosted three main events – the 75th Diamond Anniversary (1977), the Centenary Anniversary (2002), and the 120th Jubilee in 2022, and there was a strong basis to host a grand quinquennial celebration.
“All of us felt that the gaps between the grand celebrations were too wide. It is our hope to keep the school spirit alive and well, long after we have left our Alma Mater, hence the idea to host something grand every five years,” he said.
Over the last decade, SHOSA’s reunions jointly hosted with their neighbouring St. Elizabeth Secondary School alumni have garnered anything from 500 people to a whopping 1,200 people in 2012.
