KUCHING: Attractive prizes including cash, plaques, trophies and study awards await winners of HELP University’s annual secondary school online English debate challenge 2021 which will commence on July 9 to 11.

The university disclosed that the champion team will bag a challenge trophy, plaques and cash prize of RM3,000 for the school; four trophies and certificates for the team and partial scholarships worth RM12,000 for each team member.

The runner-up team will bring home a plaque and cash prize of RM2,000 for the school; four trophies and certificates for the team and partial scholarships worth RM8,000 for each team member.

Meanwhile, the two semi finalist teams will be awarded plaque and cash prize of RM1,000 for each school; four plaques and certificates for each team and partial scholarships worth RM4,000 for each team member.

The competition was previously known as the HELP University National Chinese Independent Secondary School (CISS) English debate. It successfully attracted 40 contesting teams from 24 non-English medium schools from Malaysia and overseas.

The annual competition was launched by HELP University with the objective of upgrading the level of command in English among secondary school students from non-English medium schools particularly those from CISS Malaysia.

Last year the university could not hold the competition due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, it decided to hold the debate virtually this year. The name of the competition has also changed to the HELP University Secondary School Online English Debate Challenge.

The preliminaries will be held tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday (July 10) while the semi-finals and grand final will take place on Sunday (July 11).
