Authentic Bidayuh dishes at Bau district-level Gawai

KUCHING: The Bau district-level Gawai festival will be held at the Dewan Suarah here on Saturday.

Organised jointly by the Bau District office, Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Bau and Serapi branches and Bau Service Centre, the event aims to showcase the traditional and cultural activities, practices, cuisines and fashion of the local Bidayuh community.

Among the activities to be held include sukan rakyat such as ‘nyagu’ (grating of sago logs), ‘poh podi’ (pounding rice with mortar and pestle), ‘nindih boras’ (rice winnowing and threshing) and ‘ngitua elow’ (sago leaves weaving).

There will also be a traditional Bidayuh culinary demonstration for the preparation of ‘kau ikien’ (fermented fish) and ‘tuak’ (rice wine) as well as ‘kasah’ (traditional Bidayuh mat weaving).

Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong is expected to officiate at the Gawai dinner where guests (free entrance) will be served authentic Bidayuh food such as ‘pogang’, ‘kau ikien’, ‘ayam pansuh’, ‘tutuk sorai’, ‘kasam sabih’ and other traditional cuisines.

The guests will also be entertained by local artistes such as Megaforce and winners of the recently held Idola Bitang Torang 2019.
