Vaccination: No such thing as first-come-first-served

KUCHING: Vaccine recipients, please take note.  If you think you will be given a queue number that will enable you to take the vaccine much earlier by arriving at vaccine centres well before the actual vaccination appointment time, you are in for a big disappointment. It’s not going to happen.  Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said instead, early comers (to Stadium Perpaduan) will be seated in a separate waiting area.  “This is to avoid chaos and overcrowding which will result in long waiting times and decreased efficiency of the vaccination process,” he said in a Facebook post last night (June 6).  He said the new crowd flow management in place at the stadium will help prevent frustration among recipients.  “So, remember, those who have already received the appointment date and time will just need to arrive 30 minutes before their appointment,” he said.  Dr Sim, using an analogy of the experience of boarding a flight, said it’s just like one not having to to go to the airport in the morning when the flight is in the afternoon.  “Even in transit ,when you don’t get out of the airport, the boarding gate doesn’t open,” he said.  In the meantime, he expressed gratitude to the numerous agencies under the federal and state governments for managing the crowd during the vaccination process and continuing to monitor, refine and improve the whole process.

What a big relief for SPM students

KUCHING: The announcement by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to postpone this year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) public examination to 2022 comes as a great relief to students. This is the second consecutive year the exam is being put off, following a similar decision last year. On Sunday (June 6), Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin announced the written SPM examination has been postponed to March next year. The oral and practical examinations will be held a month earlier. The government made the decision after looking into the present Covid-19 pandemic which has affected the students’ studies. What some of the students say: Isaac Law “This is a good opportunity for us and we should not take it for granted. The decision to hold the exam next year will give us more time to get ready. I feel that if the SPM is held this year, it would cause many of us to panic as for almost half of the year, we have been studying online which is quite challenging for us. I hope the Covid-19 situation will improve as soon as possible so that all of us can return to school and concentrate on our studies.”  Dillon Unting  “Sitting for SPM next year is good because I can have more time to study. It is not something unprecedented as the previous batch also went through the same predicament. Hopefully, this time around the MoE will fix the exam date earlier so that all of us can be better prepared.”  Muhammad Irfan Aniq Azizi “On the good side, we will have more time to prepare for the exam. But the sad part is that we will be taking the exam at the age of 18 where we should already be preparing to enter college. Having said that, we take it as a challenge to learn and succeed.”
