KUCHING: Bau OCPD DSP Poge Nyaon took to the streets in a crime prevention programme on Wednesday.

He said the community policing involved villagers and National Anti-Drug Agency as well.

Police were at Kampung Bijuray Mongag, Bau and making their rounds, a talk on the menace of drugs was held.

Besides creating awareness, DSP Poge said the talk was also to explain the legal process involving suspects, and reminding youths in Bau to avoid falling prey to drug peddlers.   He wanted the community policing programme to strengthen ties between residents and the police so that the scourge of drugs can be eliminated.

A villager, Juso, said he was glad that the police these days were out and about, and not just staying put in the police station expecting crime rates to fall.  He said the police had to be pro-active and be seen to deter criminals.

Understanding that policemen could not be at one place 24 hours, he said the community policing effort was a huge welcome – so that the villagers can be the law’s eyes and ears. Juso also expressed his deep concern about the drug menace creeping into a sleepy hollow like Bau, and urged the police and the anti-drug agency to act quickly.

He stressed that the relevant authorities should not sweep anything under the carpet but deal with the drug problem for the sake of the young ones.
