KUCHING: The automatic registration of voters will significantly save on manpower and resources, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Women national vice president Voon Shiak Ni.

She cited as examples how political parties and rights groups previously had to hold registration drives in order to register voters.

“While women in some parts of the world are still fighting for their rights to vote, Malaysia has just created history by giving all Malaysians an automatic right to vote when they reach 18,” Voon commented.

“I personally view this historic amendment as a positive development in promoting political awareness and the participation of the young in nation-building,” she said, adding that this would enhance the social responsibility of the younger generation.

“This amendment will see several million young persons aged between 18 and 20 having their voices heard via the ballot boxes in the coming general election in 2023,” she stated.

According to Voon, this voting right will generate positivity among the youths between 18 and 20 as the right to vote indicates that their voices are of utmost importance in shaping the society and nation in which they and their families live.
