Awang Tengah flags off intercountry research expedition

MIRI: The Gerenai-Long Mekaba Scientific Expedition convoy comprising 40 vehicles and 97 researchers from three countries (Malaysia – Sabah Sarawak; Indonesia and Brunei) took off smoothly today.

The event was flagged off by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

The journey will take about six to seven hours from Miri City via logging roads in Baram.

Long Mekaba is part of the Gerenai Forest Management Unit (FMU), situated at the Batang Baram-Sungai Silat area, in Miri Division. It has common boundaries with the Usun Apau National Park and the proposed Sg Moh Wildlife Sanctuary.

The geological features of the FMU landscape ranges from river side flats that quickly grade into low undulating hills which lead to rugged mountainous terrain with altitudes ranging from 150 to 1,820 metres above sea level.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Development Datuk Rosey Yunus and Sarawak Forest Department (SFD) director Datuk Hamden Mohammad.
