KUCHING: Awang Zailani won his first ever golf title after he emerged as the overall champion in the Srixon XXIO Cup 2017 golf tournament held at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) on last weekend. Playing with handicap 7, Awang walked home with the champion’s trophy and the top prize sponsored by Srixon after he returned the day with a nett score of 5 under par 67 while Mohd Jafni Ismail finished second placing just one stroke adrift. Ahmad Zain was third with nett score of 69 while Hasnu Mohd Noor finished fourth on countback (OCB) on Saturday.

Sarawak’s upcoming junior golfer, Malcom Ting came in first in the gross category with three over par 75 while Daniel Yeo finished second with two strokes adrift and Lee Kah Ming was third with a score of 78. The Junior nett category was won by Anson Yeo who carded a two over par 74 while Noor Afrina Ain came in second with one stroke adrift and Wesley Chai finished third placing with 77 strokes.

The Junior gross category was won by Aiman Zuhairi Othman who returned the day with 90 strokes but lady luck was also smiling on the teenager when he also walked home with the lucky draw grand prize which is a brand new Srixon 355 iron golf clubs set worth RM6,000.

The novelty prizes were namely Zainal Abbidin Sadi and Benjamin Ethan who scored the nearest to the pin at Hole 8 and 15 respectively. The winners received their prizes from S. Raj Kumar the representative Srixon Sports Asia Sdn Bhd, deputy general manager of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Edwin Abit who was accompanied by DGCC general manager, Roslan Mohd Salleh.

According to Kumar, the event at DGCC was the first held in Kuching while the one to be held in Miri soon is entering the second year but the company may come back here again next year depending on the demand from the local golfers who had been supporting Srixon range of golf products the past years.

He said the highlight of the company’s golf event calendar is the invitational tournament to be held in the Peninsular Malaysia soon where the participants from all over the country will have the opportunity to bring home the lucky draw grand prize which is a Toyota Fortuner 4WD worth over RM190,000.
