Head of State keeps faith with state govt to negotiate restoration of rights
KUCHING: Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud called on the people of Sarawak to give their support to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his government in the negotiations to restore the state’s rights.
Talks between the federal and Sarawak governments to restore the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) must be done in good faith and in a manner that is conducive to the preservation of good relationship.
This was the gist of Taib’s opening remarks at the 18th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, yesterday.
He said Sarawak was recognised as a territory under MA63, so its rights under the agreement must be safeguarded.
“I am pleased that the leaders of the state government have been negotiating with the federal government to restore those rights.
“Several committees have been established at the federal and state levels, and I believe they are the best foundation for us to negotiate and regain our rights,” he stressed.
He also told the people not to take any action beyond the limits of the law that can undermine the peace and security of the state.
“I believe Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and all parties involved in the negotiation will continue to look after the interests of Sarawak and its development agenda,” he said.
Taib also appealed to all parties regardless of political affiliations to continue to support the government under the leadership of Abang Johari in negotiating for the return of the rights.
According to him Sarawak is safe and peaceful, and the socio-racial harmony the people today enjoy is the result of close ties between the people of various ethnic groups, cultures and religions.
“The spirit of mutual trust and respect has been a solid foundation for the unity of Sarawakians since long ago.
“Unity is also a solid foundation of our socio-economic development, so I urge all parties to maintain it as well as security of the country,” he said.
Taib then said he believed Sarawakians are wise and not easily deceived by the negative agenda of outsiders and they refuse the elements that try to harm their harmonious state.
“I am convinced that with the firm, courageous and visionary leadership of the state government, our unity will continue to be strengthened,” he added.
