SAMARAHAN: Too many heavy vehicles exceeding the load limits have apparently damaged the Samarahan Expressway and Jalan Pesisir Asajaya-Sadong Jaya here.

Works are being carried out along the expressway and the roads to repair the damaged stretches and fix the potholes.

“Based on public complaints and regular monitoring by my team, there are too many heavy vehicles that are believed to have exceeded the load limits.

“These heavy vehicles use the roads until they are damaged so much so other vehicles cannot use these roads,” Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang lamented when contacted yesterday (Jan 19).

She is currently in Kuala Lumpur to attend the parliamentary special conference on flood disasters.

She hoped enforcement agencies, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the local authority, would double their enforcement on overloaded vehicles that frequently pass through the road.

While appreciating the efforts of the Public Works Department (PWD) to address the problem, she hoped the department would resolve the issue immediately through effective monitoring and without relying too heavily on public complaints.

On the coastal road from the junction of Kampung Tambay to Asajaya, Rubiah said it is currently being upgraded.

“The process involves paving the road up to three layers to meet the needs of roads that are increasingly used by various types of vehicles, including heavy load vehicles,” she said.

On the road congestion problems since the opening of the school in Kota Samarahan, she advised the school management and parent-teachers association (PIBG) to find volunteers or enlist the services of RELA to help reduce congestion in front of the school, especially in the morning and afternoon.

Rubiah gave the example of RELA personnel at SMK Hajjah Laila Taib that helped to control traffic in the morning.

She was confident that road congestion in front of the school could be reduced with good traffic management in their respective schools, especially in front of SMK Muara Tuang and SK Jalan Muara Tuang.
