Bakun dam regulates water level, keeping excess water from flooding the lower region most of the year.

KUCHING: Kapit Division was flooded a couple of times this year, which was a big improvement according to Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing.

He said if not for Bakun and Murum dams holding the water in the Rajang River watershed, Sibu, Kapit and Belaga would have been under water a few times this year.

He said the two dams (Bakun and Murum) were not just for power generation but for flood mitigation for the towns downstream.

Masing said once Baleh Dam was on stream in 2026, it had much control of Rajang River which means fewer and less severe floods.

He was commenting on a flash flood that hit some parts of Belaga due to heavy rain since Monday.
