“I’m glad that everything is running well. As of Friday (March 22) we have received 15 entries, of which four are for the paddle boat category. We are expecting more teams by the end of the deadline early next week,” said Galong here today.

The first leg is from Rumah Lugat Anak Berain, Nanga Semawang, Sungai Majau, Baleh on April 6 and on the second day, the route is from Rumah Ekau Anak Ubong, Nanga Mujong, Baleh river to the Kapit Express Passenger Terminal.

The race is Kapit’s major tourism event held annually and “helps to remind the people on the importance of water transportation in the early days until today, is still the main mode of transportation in the absence of roads,” said Galong.

“On the other hand, the race also offers the participants a rare opportunity to stay overnight to experience the hospitality of two Iban longhouses built along the river bank,” he added.

The competition is organised by the Kapit Resident Office in collaboration with the Sarawak Tourism Board, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry and the various government agencies in Kapit Division.

Other activities include fishing competition, powerboat races and a new programme at Rumah Lugat (first flag-off point) – the Rainforest Baleh-Kapit Run to be held early April 5.
