LAWAS: The bamboo industry holds immense potential in the production of another renewable energy.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said for instance, the bamboo resources can be processed into pellets, serving as a biomass that can be utilised as fuel, similar to charcoal.

“While there are other sources of biomass, but bamboo can grow rapidly when replanted, thus making it a renewable energy.

“Additionally, apart from bamboo bicycle products, there are many other products that can be produced from bamboo.

“Therefore, it is hoped that the cultivation of bamboo will bring benefits to Lawas, and I believe Sarawak will become a state with high-income by 2030,” he said when officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony of LePapa Hypermarket and Roxy Hotel project at Jalan Merapok here on Sunday (May 28).

Earlier, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said as part of Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation’s (STIDC) programme, he had asked Tecktonic and Sons Holdings Sdn Bhd, the developer of LePapa Hypermarket and Roxy Hotel, to participate in a bamboo plantation programme.

“This will be an area of focus to promote bamboo cultivation in the Lawas area,” he said.

Awang Tengah emphasised the significant economic potential of bamboo cultivation, as it enables the production of various goods. He cited as an example, a city in China that was once a small village, but experienced prosperity due to the bamboo industry where even underwear could be made from bamboo.
