KUCHING: No more open burning will be allowed for domestic, farming and industrial purposes in the coming dry season. This is in order to prevent haze, said Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

According to him, the dry season will start in July and will go until October this year. Stern action will be taken against those found guilty of the offence, he stressed.

“I want the State authorities to stop issuing permits for forest burning and at the same time stop the current forest burning due to the dry season that will arrive and we do not want what was happening in Baram last year to recur.

“So I request those out there, be they individuals or companies, not to burn the forest as legal action will be taken against those who are found guilty of the offence,” said Wan Junaidi.

He told this to reporters when hosting a Hari Raya open house held at old State Assembly Building (DUN), in Petra Jaya, yesterday.

He also noted that the Indonesian side had taken the necessary action in preventing forest fire.

“With the assurance that they have given us, we have found that there is no haze this year,” he said, adding the El Nino phenomenon is also getting less due to the wet weather.
