SIBU: A bank clerk lost RM27,620 after being duped by an online job offer which promises a fake commission.

Sibu OCPD ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) had received a report from the victim in his 40s, on Aug 29.

Initially, the victim received a message from an unknown number via WhatsApp, that was offering a side hustle.

“The description of this job is very simple, that is, taking pictures of the goods to be purchased on the website and make the payment as requested.

“Once the task is completed, the victim will be paid back the payment together with a 10 per cent commission as promised,” he said.

The victim, who did not think twice about the offer, made six transactions amounting to RM27,620 into different accounts to perform the tasks as given by the alleged agent.

Despite completing the tasks, the victim had yet to receive any payment money along with the commission.

Zulkipli said the victim only realised that he had been duped after not receiving the financial reimbursement and commission.

He advised the public not to be easily misled and be more alert to the scammer’s modus operandi and make rational decisions before taking action.

“Through this approach, banking risk can be reduced while preventing criminals from continuing the crime,” he said.
