Agreement for exclusive supply of fish signed

KUCHING: Sarawak fast food chain Sugarbun and Borneo Eco Fish Sdn Bhd (BEF) yesterday co-signed an agreement for exclusive supply of tilapia fish.

The agreement was signed by Sugarbun general manager cum Borneo Oil Berhad executive director Raymond Teo and BEF director Thomas Hii.

Present to witness the signing ceremony was Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Following the signing of the agreement, BEF will supply a minimum of up to 10 tonnes of Batang Ai’s red tilapia fish per month with specific premium quality and size to Sugarbun.

Uggah stated that the agreement would further enhance Batang Ai’s tilapia industry and develop the state’s agricultural sector.

“At first, we successfully export tilapia fish to Singapore and now we have reached another milestone by supplying tilapia fish to SugarBun,” he said.

He added that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has directed the state’s agricultural sector to chart its course to be a net food exporter by 2030.

“Currently, we are a net importer at almost RM4 billion a year. To reverse this is not a small challenge. But I am sure that with the new approach by the state government, we are on track. It’s a long journey but it can be achieved,” he said when officiating at the event held at Wisma SugarBun.

Uggah, who is also the Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development, further mentioned that the agreement will assist the government to raise the income of the rural people in Sarawak, especially in Batang Ai.

He noted that at present, the ministry is assisting in the upgrading of facilities in Batang Ai to cater for the industry players so that they will be able to meet the requirements of the international market such as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Halal certifications.

Amongst those present were Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Agriculture Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Native Land Development Assistant Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
