KUCHING: The maritime community in Sarawak is advised to be cautious when undertaking any activities at sea.

According to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak state director First Admiral (Maritime) Robert Teh Geok Chuan, it is especially important for fishermen operating small boats, tourism boat operators and passengers to be concerned for their safety while at sea to avoid any unwanted incidents.

He stated, “The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued a warning on strong winds from the north east with a speed of 40 to 50 kmph and to expect waves that can reach a height of 3.5m.

“These conditions are dangerous for small boats and recreational and sports activities at sea.”

MMEA is calling for cooperation from tourism boat operators, passenger boats and fishermen to jointly improve safety at sea.

He also hopes that beach recreation facility operators temporarily halt all activities and sports at sea until the weather has calmed down.

In this regard, Robert also urged the public to contact the state maritime on any emergencies at 082-432544 or the 24-hour number 999.
