DALAT: A resident of a village located at the upper river of Batang Oya claimed that they had been approached by four strangers recently. According to the village chief of Kampung Klid, Kujang Chalang, the four individuals claimed that they were engineers from Peninsular Malaysia.

“They said they were the engineers from a university in Peninsular Malaysia. They asked me several questions about the village and I felt hesitant to entertain them because nowadays a lot of people are not who they claim to be,” he said.

He added that he was confused and felt that something was not right when they said that they would be leaving at a certain time on that day as to go to Dalat would take them more than an hour by boat, and then to Mukah and Sibu. “So I decided not to give them important information regarding the village because I am in the dark about their of purpose coming here.

“With that, I would like to advise the villagers not to simply give out information to strangers unless their intentions are clear,” he said. Kujang said this in his welcoming speech at the Mukah Division Forward Based Simulation and Training Management Programme (FBSTMP) held at SK Klid/Plajau last Sunday. Meanwhile, he also thanked the state Welfare Department for conducting the programme, which could benefit them as the area is prone to floods.

He explained that the area is always the first to be affected by floods and that it takes a long time for the water to recede as the floods were caused by water flowing from the most upper part of Batang Oya, such as Baoh and Nanga Boah. “When it’s high tide, it returns to the area from down the river which causes us to experience stagnant water. “That’s why Kampung Klid and the surrounding areas are the first to be flooded and the last to recede,” he said.
