KUCHING: Some 600 residents of various races and religions took part in the Unity Ride in conjunction with Sarawak 2022 National Day celebration in Betong on Wednesday.

The fine weather ensured the smooth running of the 2.4km cycling event starting from the Betong Division Sports Complex to Medan Square which was flagged off by the Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Julaihi Narawi who is also the minister in charge.

Leading the cycling was Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Earlier, a Malaysian Family stretching exercise was held.

The excitement of Malaysian families who wanted to express their love for the country through every celebration event held was clearly evident while waving the Jalur Gemilang and the Sarawak flag.

According to one of the cycling participants Tan Gek Hui, 60, the involvement of the multi-ethnic and religious community on Aug 31 showed that Malaysians are very enthusiastic about observing the National Day anniversary.

Meanwhile Chad Hanniel Jupong, 15, expressed his pride in being able to cycle together on this big day.

“As a young person I felt the spirit of the Malaysian people in the celebration of National Day, it cannot be denied.

“I hope that this spirit continues to flourish to ensure that the Malaysian Family continues to be strong together to develop the country,” he said.

Also present were Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Seri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, deputy ministers, Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat and other elected representatives in Betong Division.
