KUCHING: The Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) is planning to set up a temporary campus in Betong.

Chief executive officer of Centexs Syeed Mohd Hussein Wan Abdul Rahman disclosed that the campus would be set up in January or March next year.

He disclosed this to the media when met after Centexs’ fourth convocation ceremony at Penview Convention Centre Demak (PCCD) in Demak here yesterday.

He said the Betong campus would provide a number of training programmes including fashion technology, digital agriculture and also electrical.

“There are three focus areas for Betong and digital agriculture is very important for it,” he said.

He said there will be two intakes for the campus. If it is January and July or April and October, one intake can have 25 students in one class. There are four classes so there will be 50 times two intakes a year meaning 100 people.

“So two intakes a year means 200 people,” he said.

He said Centexs has identified two blocks of three-storey shophouses in Betong for that purpose.

“The location is very good for the students and they are waiting for us to come,” he said, adding that most probably the campus would be opened early next year.

“The shophouses are ready and just need to be renovated. There is a piece of land for a bigger campus but the centre wants to see how the people from Betong, Sarikei and Sibu respond to the smaller campus first,” he said.

On the progress of Centexs Campus in Lundu, he said the RM200-million campus is still under construction.

“By 2020, all of these campuses in Lundu, Lawas and Dalat should be completed. Then probably by 2021, we would have a campus in Betong.

He said Centexs is only four years old and now has campuses in Kuching, Lawas, Dalat, Lundu and Betong.

Centexs first started in Kuching on October 2014.
