KUCHING: Village folk now have better access to new agricultural methods thanks to the Agriculture Community Outreach Programme (AgriCOP).
Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu said this was through demonstrating new techniques in agriculture to them as one of the initiatives of the programme.
“AgriCOP was implemented by the Sarawak government to further strengthen the collaboration between the Agriculture Department and rural folk.
“We expect the short-term output from the programme would provide direct exposure to the latest agricultural technology to the target group through lectures, exhibitions and agricultural demonstrations.”
He said this in a Facebook post today after officiating at the AgriCOP programme in Layar, Betong.
A total of 117 participants were involved the programme from 13 longhouses around Melayu Ili, Melayu Ulu, Skatap, Gensurai, Engkeranji, Dabok, Rian Batang, Tanu, Jungkal, Lubau Baru, Lubau Lama, Nanga Ajau and Meribong Layar.
Rentap also said the state government aimed to inculcate knowledge, awareness and skills of various target groups of the agricultural sector through the programme.
“This is as well as improving the production and quality of agricultural products and bringing the government closer to the people through the Agriculture Department and the farmers.”
He added that among the activities in the programme were briefings on fertigation of ginger, rearing fish in tanks and well as farming using hydroponics.
Besides that, there were demonstrations on producing Perkasam Ikan (fermented fish) and the making of pineapple sauce and cordial.
