KUCHING: The construction and completion of the Jalan Sungai Maong to Segedup Road project will provide better travel experience to the people in Segedup, Sungai Maong and Satok areas.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing said currently, the only route for the people from Segedup to the town was Batu Kawah Road.

“As such, this Jalan Sungai Maong to Segedup Road will give people staying in the area a choice or alternative route to travel, especially to the northern side of Kuching,” he said in his speech before the groundbreaking ceremony of the road  at Lorong 10, Kampung Segedup, Batu Kawa on Tuesday (June 30).

Dr Masing said the main objective of the project was to construct a new Public Works Department (JKR) U3 Standard Road linking two villages, namely Kampung Sungai Maong and Kampung Segedup, and upgrading approximately 600 metres of existing village roads.

“The proposed route commences from the existing roundabout at Jalan Datuk Temenggong Tan Meng Chong. The proposed single carriageway road is approximately 3.60 kms long and consists of two proposed reinforced concrete bridges crossing Sungai Maong (80 metres) and Sungai Pedada (54 metres).

“In addition, Kampung Sungai Maong will be connected to the proposed new road via a spur road of approximately 69 metres long,” he said.

Dr Masing, who is also the Infrastructure and Ports Development Minister, said the project’s main work components consisted of the construction of the single carriageway with three spans new bridge (crossing Sungai Maong and Sungai Pedada),  two river piers, two abutments and two sides of piled embankment, which would be completed with RC embankment walls on top of embankment slab.

“The project also includes the upgrading, realignment and resurfacing of the existing carriageway at Kampung Segedup, construction of a new proposed single carriageway road from the existing roundabout at Jalan Temenggong Tan Meng Chong to existing Jalan Segedup (Kampung Segedup Lorong 10) and provision of new furniture which will be inclusive of new road markings, safety barriers, road signs, street lightings and others,” he said.

Dr Masing pointed out the completion of the project would also help to ease the traffic flow between Matang and Batu Kawa.

“We hope this road will provide smoother, safer and quicker communication for those staying around Segedup, Sungai Maong, Satok areas and the visitors as well.

“This road not only gives us a better driving experience but also brings about immediate and long term social economic benefits to the local community in the areas,” he said.

With these historic infrastructure developments,   Sarawak, the deputy chief minister added, was one step closer to realising its dream of being one of the most developed states in Malaysia by 2030.

“My fellow Sarawkians, I believe we are all waiting eagerly for the upcoming developments which will greatly impact the socio-economic landscape of our beloved Sarawak.

“I call on all Sarawakians to stay united together despite the challenging political landscape and to prioritise their rights as Sarawakians first to ensure the development of our beloved Bumi Kenyalang,” said Dr Masing.

According to a media release by JKR, the Jalan Sungai Maong to Segedup road project is expected to be completed by January 2022.
