KUCHING: GPS leaders have been told not to accept reports presented to them at face value.

Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing warned of the danger of reports made to please superiors, saying ground follow-ups must be made to ascertain their reliability.

“Go directly to the ground and see for yourself what is happening at the grassroots level. Sometimes the information presented to you may not be factually correct,” he said to delegates of the GPS Convention 2019 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here yesterday.

Tiong spoke of leaders who wanted to appear good to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg by painting only glossy pictures of themselves.

He described such leaders as being in a state of denial, “opportunistic and betraying the trust of the people”.

Tiong also spoke of ‘yes men’ who are “accommodating in front but condemn and backstab when they are behind you”.

“I am appealing to this sort of leaders, please change. If you don’t change, the people will change you. This is what we call the power of the people,” he said.

He warned that GPS will not go far with ‘yes men’.

Tiong assured Abang Johari of “PDP’s undivided support” in his fight for Sarawak rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He said the state government should sue petroleum companies who had refused to pay the 5 per cent sales tax imposed on exported petroleum products.
