SIBU: A special committee will be set up to ensure the Al-Qadim Mosque here is fully utilised not only in a physical sense but also its role in the Muslim community.

Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Dr Annuar Rapaee said he has taken the advice of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to set up a special panel to ensure the mosque will not only be grand in terms of how it looks but most importantly excel in terms of its role.

“I also pledge to make sure the more than 160-year-old mosque will attract not only visitors but also the youngsters.

“I will make every effort to ensure this mosque is an attraction for young people so that they can work together to ensure this mosque progresses one step further,” he said.

Dr Annuar who is Nangka assemblyman, said this in his welcoming speech during the re-opening of the refurbished Al-Qadim Mosque which was graced by Abang Johari on Yesterday (July 11) evening.

“Let’s make this mosque not just a place for visitors, not just for us to worship but most importantly to make this mosque a place to carry out community welfare and also spread knowledge or Islamic teachings in Sibu,” he said.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak government for providing allocations for the restoration of the Al-Qadim Mosque and gazetting it as a historical building.

“I thank the state government for gazetting this mosque as a heritage treasure for the state of Sarawak,” he said.

The Al Qadim Mosque is the only mosque in Sarawak gazetted as a Historical Building under the Sarawak Cultural Heritage Ordinance 1993.
