SERIAN: Police foiled a local man’s bid to smuggle two illegal immigrants into Sarawak on Sunday.

At 1pm, a police team carrying out Ops Benteng Covid patrol at Jalan Serian-Tebedu received a public tip-off on the entry of illegal immigrants through an illegal route (jalan tikus) in Tebedu.

Serian OCPD DSP Aswandy Anis said the team spotted a suspicious vehicle. “They followed the vehicle to Jalan Serian-Gedong before blocking it for inspection at 3.25pm.”

He added, “A 24-year-old man, believed to be a tekong (agent), and an Indonesian couple were inside.

“The couple, aged 41 and 36, did not have any valid travel documents.”

The trio and the car used were taken to the police station for further action.

Interrogation revealed that the couple entered Sarawak via jalan tikus and were taken to Simunjan to work in an oil palm plantation.

Aswandy said the local man would be remanded under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012 while the illegal immigrants were detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
