The akad nikah online ceremony was the first in Sarawak.

KUCHING: It was the biggest day of their lives when lovebirds Nurul Azurin Mohd Johari, 21 and Ahmad Amirudin Johari, 26, finally got to tie the knot yesterday.

They are the first couple in Sarawak to have their marriage solemnised via video conferencing.

Before the ceremony, Nurul Azurin was all set for the big day, dressed in a white baju kurung set paired with a grey scarf with a lace veil.

Facing her smartphone, she sat beside her father on a sofa in the living room of her house in Bandar Baru Semariang here.

On the screen was a live feed of her husband Ahmad Amirudin reciting his marriage vows.

“It took less than 20 minutes for everything to be finalised,” said Nurul Azurin in a phone interview with New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

She is grateful and thankful to be married to Ahmad Amirudin whom she had befriended since March last year. He works as a soldier at Terendak Military Camp in Malacca.

“Alhamdulillah, we are finally married,” she said.

Dress up for her wedding day, Azurin can’t wait to be Amirudin’s wife.

Nurul Azurin explained that the online akad nikah was initiated by her husband.

“He proposed the idea and after we were given the green light by our parents, we submitted the application for approval by Jais,” she said.

On the online ceremony, she added, “I thought it was quite strange at first.”

Following the protocol enforced by Sarawak Islamic Affairs Department (Jais), the bride and groom had to use either a smart phone or a smart TV for the marriage ceremony.

“It was important to check if the network connectivity was fine. Alhamdulillah, on the actual day, with the help of a handful of people, we managed to be on livestream without any disruption to Internet connectivity during the akad nikah ceremony,” said Nurul Azurin.

Nurul Azurin is looking to meeting her husband who flies to Kuching this morning.
