SIMUNJAN: The Lubok Punggor bund repair project under the Agriculture Office of Samarahan Division for paddy cultivation area will revive the popular biris rice production in Simunjan area.

Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the project worth RM1,636,159 through the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) involved repairing the broken bund which had caused water to stagnate and affect the quality of the paddy cultivated there in.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), the Batang Sadong MP said upon the project completion, it would help an area of 130 acres in increasing the productivity of paddy crops.

“The paddy cultivation area has an area of 130 acres which is owned by 130 farmers. However, thus far, we see that the paddy area which is still active is about 90 acres because there are areas which are not suitable.

“We hope that residents in Lubok Punggor who have land in this area can return to planting paddy,” she said when officiating at the project site handover to the contractor at Kampung Lubok Punggor, Gedong on Monday (Jan 17).

It will take six months to complete the bund repair project, and it is estimated to get done in July, Nancy added.
