KUCHING: A 30-member delegation from the Welfare Association of Wives of Officers and Women Staff of the Brunei Government (BISTARI) led by its president Datin Dayang Hajah Asmah binti Haji Abdul Rahman visited the DBKU Orchid Park at Petra Jaya here, yesterday.
The visitors were accompanied by 15 members of Sarawak Women MAKSAK and wife of Mayor of Kuching City North Council (DBKU), Datin Hajah Dayang Horiah Dato Sri Abang Zainuddin.
The Brunei delegation was given a guided tour of the DBKU Orchid Park by Au Yong Kien Chung, the contractor of Orchid Wood, who also manages the DBKU Orchid Park.
Datin Dayang Hajah Asmah binti Haji Abdul Rahman said they were amazed with the beauty of the Orchid Park which has received many local and foreign visitors.
DBKU Orchid Park at Petra Jaya here since its opening to the public about eight years ago, has been receiving about 40,000 visitors annually.
Formerly known as DBKU Orchid Garden, it was upgraded on 5 April, 2013 in line with DBKU Strategic Plan to develop DBKU Orchid Park.
DBKU Orchid Park is divided into two main components i.e the nursery site and display area/park.
The main attraction of the Orchid Park is the Borneo Orchid Collection such as the renowned Lady’s Slipper (Paphioppedillum Stonei and Paphioppedillum Lowii), Coelogyne Dearei, and Norma Orchid (Phalaenopsis Bellina).
Presently, DBKU Orchid Park has a total collection of 80,000 orchids comprising 80 genera and 70 varieti orchids. DBKU Orchid Park also housed Orchid Norma which is the official orchid for the state of Sarawak.
DBKU Orchid Park is also equipped with facilities such as musolla, cafeteria, souvenir shop and car park for the convenience of visitors.
