KUCHING: The state government has introduced a discount on electricity and water bills for Sarawakians in the latest Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance (BKSS) 6.0 package.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said domestic, commercial and industrial consumers can enjoy a five to 25 percent discount on their electricity bills from July to Dec this year.

“The discount will benefit 647,000 households, commercial and industrial consumers across Sarawak. The total cost of this electricity bill discount amounting to RM166.8 million will be borne by the Sarawak government,” he said.

He added, similarly the state government was offering a 10 to 25 percent discount on water bills for domestic, commercial and industrial consumers from July to Dec this year, benefitting 647,000 households across Sarawak. This will cost the state government RM32.1 million.

Abang Johari said BKSS 6.0 also included a discount of 25 percent for assessment rates exceeding RM400 and 30 percent discount for rates of RM400 and below for residential, commercial, industrial and special holding premises from July to December.

“This measure will benefit 185,000 premises in the local authority and at the same time ease the burden of the people and traders in Sarawak. The discount costs RM54 million,” he said.

The chief minister also announced the 50 percent discount on Local Authority (PBT) market and stall rentals for traders and hawkers would continue for July to December this year.

“This assistance will benefit more than 10,000 registered hawkers who rent markets and stalls under PBT. The entire discount of RM1.7 million will be funded by the Sarawak government,” he said.

For Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) renting at government linked company (GLC) premises, Abang Johari said the rental exemption will continue until December. This, he said costs an additional RM2 million.

He added, the state government would also continue its 50 percent discount on rental for the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) housing scheme.

“This measure will benefit more than 3,200 tenants of the HDC housing scheme throughout Sarawak. The total cost of this discount is estimated to exceed RM2.6 million,” he said.
