PAKAN: A destructive fire engulfed the top floor of a two-storey longhouse located at Jalan Pakan, Ulu Wak on Tuesday (May 30).
The incident tragically destroyed the Rh Selusin residents’ preparations for the upcoming Gawai celebration on June 1.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported as all 76 residents were able to evacuate safely and move their vehicles to secure areas.
However, the 10.35am blaze has cast a sombre atmosphere over the approaching celebration, leaving the community in shock and uncertainty.
Upon receiving the alert, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) swiftly dispatched firefighters from the Bintangor and Sarikei stations to the scene.
The fire, which engulfed a 15-door longhouse, was still raging upon their arrival, necessitating immediate extinguishing efforts.
The front areas of the longhouse, including the ruai (common area) and upstairs bedrooms, were completely destroyed, while the back areas, including the middle section and kitchen, were salvaged from the flames.
The fire caused approximately 80 per cent damage overall but was successfully brought under control by around 11.35am.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the losses incurred are still under investigation.
