Blind voter fulfills responsibility

KUCHING: Like many first-time voters, Muhammad Alwi Tiong was all excited to cast his vote in the 15th general election (GE15) today.

The 35-year-old who is blind arrived at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) Chung Hua Sungai Tapang Hilir voting centre in Batu Kawah here at around 9.08am.

He was accompanied by his best friend, Douglas Goh, 32, who also voted at the same polling station.

“Today, I come here to fulfill my responsibility as a citizen of Malaysia by voting.

“This is my first time, and I believe it is very important to vote in order to decide the direction of the country,” he said.

He also hoped that the new government formed after the GE15 would be able to bring the country to greater heights.

He said his voting process was carried out very smoothly and orderly.

“For people like me, I can bring along someone whom I trust such as my friends, or siblings of close family members to help me during the voting process.

“The person that accompanies me will help me to cross the ballot paper according to my choice of whom I want to vote for,” he said.

For future elections, he hoped that the authorities could prepare a special lane, particularly for people with disabilities (OKU) or blind people to go through the voting process with greater convenience.
