SONG: The body of a 69-year-old man feared drowned at Jeram Giam, Ulu Sungai Katibas on Oct 30, was found today (Nov 2).

A spokesman from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the body of the victim was found by villagers around 11.30am in a river near Rumah Ibi Batu Labang, some 15 kilometres away from the old Song clinic wharf.

The search and rescue team were deployed to the scene to recover the body that was later handed over to the police for further action.

The search operation was called off at 1.30pm.

On Oct 30, a longboat carrying 10 individuals including the victim to Rumah Ragie, Nanga Tada in Kanowit, capsized around 10.30am.

Nine of them, aged between four and 56 years old, managed to swim to safety.

However, the victim, who was clinging to the back of the overturned boat, could not be saved. He was swept away by strong river currents and disappeared from sight.

The survivors had asked for help from passers-by to find the victim but to no avail. Rescue agencies were later informed of the incident to help with the search.
