Bogus Customs officer escapes with RM900

MIRI: A man, who impersonated a Customs officer, robbed a durian trader in Senadin of RM900 on Sunday night.

The incident took place by the side of Jalan Sukma here at around 8.15pm.

Miri Police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah confirmed receiving a report on the incident which was lodged by the 21-year-old victim at Lutong police station that same night.

Prior to this incident, the durian trader and his nephew were cleaning up the area. They were about to close for the day when suddenly a car pulled over.

A man, who exited the car and introduced himself as a Customs officer, demanded the trader hand him over his identification card for him to check.

He later told the trader that it was illegal to trade there and demanded he pay a RM500 penalty on the spot.

When the trader was about to take out the cash, the suspect grabbed his bag which contained RM900 and fled the scene in his car.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the car plate number used by the suspect was fake.

The case is framed under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft and Section 170 for impersonating a public servant.

At press time, no arrest has been made as the police are still investigating.
