KUCHING: Nine heroic members of the public here were yesterday awarded with Bomba Hero certificates in appreciation of their bravery and services in saving a family from imminent danger during a recent accident.

The certificates were presented by Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Khirudin Drahman at a ceremony held at the State Bomba Headquarters.

“The quick action of these good people was able to prevent worse things from happening when they teamed up to extricate the victims who were trapped in the two-metre deep drain filled with water.

“Well done and congratulations! Hopefully, this kind of commitment and responsibility will continue to exist for the safety of the community,” said Khirudin at the function.

The recipients consisted of a group of food delivery riders and members of the public who acted quickly to rescue a family from drowning inside their overturned car in a monsoon drain at Jalan Camar, Petra Jaya on July 17.

The nine heroes are Jamal Ahmad, Suzana Drahman, Sahfrizal Saptu, Muhammad Akmal Aiman Dzulkarnain, Muhamad Hanif Mohamad Ramzi, Abdullah Kassim, Muhammad Hafuzulharomain Joblee, Mohamad Khairul Gani and Khairul Izwan Sidek.

It was reported that the car had turned turtle in a ditch following an attempt to avoid another vehicle that suddenly entered a nearby intersection.

All four accident victims were reported to have suffered slight injuries only but were traumatised after realising that they could have been in greater trouble if nobody had helped them.

They were immediately taken to Sarawak General Hospital by the fire department’s emergency medical rescue service unit.
