KUCHING: When firefighters are not busy extinguishing fires or rescuing trapped animals or locating missing victims, they will spend their time to educate the community on the importance of fire safety and prevention.

Such an approach was taken by Bintulu and Lawas firefighters recently, who had actively engaged with the community through informative talks and demonstrations.

On Monday (Apr 10), the Alpha, Bravo and Charlie squads of Lawas fire station organised a fire safety campaign in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2023 at Lawas Ramadan Bazaar.

The campaign led by its station chief Azman Ibrahim, was aimed at increasing community awareness of fire safety.

The campaign included talks on fire safety, demonstrations on how to prevent kitchen fires, and instructions on how to properly use a fire extinguisher.

Participants were also given the opportunity to try their hand at putting out flames, with fire extinguishers presented as prizes for successful demonstrations.

In addition to the informative sessions, visitors were also treated to mung bean porridge, distributed during the holy month of fasting.

The day before (Apr 9), the Charlie squad of Bintulu fire station welcomed a delegation of 29 students and 12 teachers from the 4th Bintulu Company Boys’ Brigade for a study tour.

Twenty nine students from the 4th Bintulu Company Boys’ Brigade performing the stop, drop and roll technique for escaping a fire at Bintulu fire station.

The delegation was enlightened about various fire fighting activities and techniques, stop drop roll technique for escaping a fire and consequences of a fire.

These efforts of educating the community on fire safety and prevention reflect the firefighters’ commitment in going beyond their core duties of extinguishing fires and rescuing those in need.

By engaging with the community through informative sessions, Bintulu and Lawas firemen hope to raise awareness of fire safety and prevention and ultimately create a safer and more fire-conscious community.
