KUCHING: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) have found that the physical condition of a fire hydrant at Lorong 16, RPR Batu Kawa, to be unsatisfactory.

Its director Datuk Khirudin Drahman in a statement, said firemen from Batu Lintang and Padungan stations had responded to a fire emergency involving five houses on Monday (Aug 28).

On arrival, the teams used the nearest fire hydrant, located about nine metres from the burning houses, to perform the extinguishing deed.

“The physical condition of the pillar fire hydrant was unsatisfactory due to the missing chamber lid and false spindle (on the hydrant).

“In addition, the hydrant was lower than the ground level (about one foot) and it was likely due to its placement at the roadside pavement.

“However, when it was used, the hydrant is able to release enough water for the fire extinguishing operation,” he said.

Khirudin stated that the team did not experience any problems related to the use of the fire hydrant during the extinguishing and rescue works.
