Bomba heaves sigh of relief

KUCHING: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) finally heaved a sigh of relief as no new wildfires were reported in Sarawak between Wednesday and yesterday.

The state fire busters have been fighting to contain an average of 30 wildfires daily since August 1. Over the
two-week period to August 14, there were a total of 426 reported cases of wildfires affecting 1,231 acres of forest, peat areas and bush throughout the state.

The highest number of daily cases was recorded on Monday (August 12) with 65 cases, followed by Saturday (August 10) with 58 cases and then Sunday (August 11) with 55 cases.

Two houses have been affected by wildfires, one in Sangki Simunjan with ten percent damage and another in Kampung Sedi, Pulau Bruit which was totally burned.

Meanwhile, firemen were still dousing existing wildfires in various locations yesterday. These locations included the area around Hamidah Welfare Complex, Kuala Baram; Kampung Sedi, Pulau Bruit, Tanjung Manis; Kampung Sangki, Simunjan; Kampung Tuie, Sarabang, Betong; Taman Harmoni, Sri Aman; Kampung Rajang, Tanjung Manis; Jalan Marudi, Miri; Jalan Batang Lupar, Sri Aman; Kampung Medong, Dalat; Kampung Supak, Betong and Taman Kopodim, Kuching.
