KUCHING: A total of 108 recruits earned their fire science accreditation from the State Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) on Tuesday (July 19).

Federal Deputy Minister of Housing and Government Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib lauded the recruits for overcoming challenges in completing the 13 modules over the course of four and a half months.

He said as part of the department, the recruits now shoulder great responsibilities in fulfilling their roles to serve the community.

He also credited the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Academy for processing and adapting training programmes to ensure trainees receive knowledge as well as skills on fire, fire safety and rescue effectively despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.

“I hope they will become excellent personnel and raise the department’s image among the other uniformed agencies in our country.

“I would like to wish them all the best and I pray for their safety,” he said at the Majlis Pertauliahan Kursus Sijil Sains Kebombaan Siri 1/2022 on Tuesday (July 19).

Ismail pointed out that BOMBA personnel face great challenges not only in firefighting but also other incidents.

He said the ministry will look into the areas of improvement in terms of welfare, promotions, and others for them.

“When BOMBA personnel are involved in a fire or accident operation, they face many risks such as explosion from flammable items.

“They are not only handing over their physical abilities to the department and government, but also their lives to ensure the safety of the people,” he said.

Besides exhibition booths, there were demonstrations conducted by the Special Tactical Operation Rescue Management (STORM) team, the air unit as well as a fire cry by the recruits in conjunction with the ceremony.

Also present during the ceremony were state Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang, BOMBA Malaysia director general Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid and state BOMBA director Datuk Khirudin Drahman.
